The problem
BDK Lawyers is an Adelaide-based law firm with a team of experienced legal professionals practising across personal injury, insurance litigation, property, technology law, and debt recovery.
When BDK first approached Caznet, the firm was running its IT environment on a small Linux-based server. The setup was experiencing serious reliability and performance issues — frequent outages, slow file access, and an infrastructure that had been outgrown by the demands of a modern legal practice. Staff were losing productive time to system problems, and the existing setup offered little in the way of redundancy, security, or scalability.
For a law firm handling sensitive client matters and court-imposed deadlines, unreliable systems aren't just frustrating — they're a genuine business risk. BDK needed a complete rethink of their IT infrastructure, not a patch job on what they had.
What we did
Caznet delivered a ground-up rebuild of BDK Lawyers' entire technology environment. The scope covered connectivity, compute, endpoints, and security — designed as a cohesive platform rather than a collection of individual fixes.
Cloud infrastructure
The ageing Linux server was decommissioned and all workloads were migrated to Caznet's Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform. This moved BDK's file storage, applications, and server infrastructure into a professionally managed data centre environment with enterprise-grade redundancy, backup, and monitoring — eliminating the single point of failure that the on-premises server had been.
Dedicated fibre connectivity
To connect BDK's office to their new cloud infrastructure, Caznet provisioned a 1 Gbps dedicated fibre connection between BDK's Victoria Square office and the data centre. This private fibre link gives the firm fast, low-latency access to their servers and files — as fast as having the server in the next room, but with the resilience and security of a data centre.
A separate 1 Gbps business internet connection was provisioned for general internet traffic — web browsing, email, cloud services, and external communications — keeping data centre traffic and internet traffic on separate paths.
Endpoint rebuild
BDK's fleet of computers was rebuilt from the ground up to take full advantage of the new cloud-based infrastructure. Workstations were configured to work with the IaaS platform, ensuring staff had fast, seamless access to files and applications hosted in the data centre, with a consistent and reliable experience across the office.
Security hardening
A significant body of work went into strengthening BDK's security posture — critical for a firm that handles confidential legal matters and is subject to professional obligations around data protection.
- Microsoft 365 Secure Score — BDK's Microsoft 365 environment was audited and hardened, working through Microsoft's Secure Score framework to tighten email security, identity protection, conditional access policies, multi-factor authentication, and data loss prevention settings.
- Next-generation firewall — A next-gen firewall was deployed at the network edge, providing application-aware traffic inspection, intrusion prevention, content filtering, and granular access control — a significant step up from the basic router-level security the firm had been relying on.
- Network security — The internal network was redesigned with proper segmentation, access controls, and monitoring, ensuring that the firm's infrastructure meets the security expectations of a modern legal practice.
The result
BDK Lawyers went from a fragile, underperforming IT setup to a modern, enterprise-grade platform in a single, coordinated project.
The firm's servers now run in a professionally managed data centre with built-in redundancy and backup, connected to the office over a dedicated 1 Gbps fibre link. Staff access their files and applications at full speed with none of the reliability issues that plagued the old server. A separate 1 Gbps internet connection handles all external traffic, giving the firm fast, reliable connectivity for day-to-day operations.
The security improvements — across Microsoft 365, the network perimeter, and internal infrastructure — give BDK a security posture appropriate for a firm handling sensitive legal work, and a foundation that can be maintained and built upon as threats evolve.
Caznet continues to support BDK Lawyers as an ongoing provider, managing the IaaS platform, connectivity, and security infrastructure that now underpins the firm's operations.
